Rev. John Shank

Senior Pastor
John Shank was born in Howell, Michigan in 1980. He is the youngest of three children. His parents were charter members of Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church where John spent his youth. John and his wife Casey were married at Shepherd of the Lakes in 2004. In 2005 John and Casey started attending Shepherd of the Lakes mission congregation – Heart of the Shepherd Lutheran in Howell. John became active in this new church. His responsibilities included serving as an elder. Casey helped to start their Child Development Center. John’s college career began at Lansing Community College where he was a member of the PHI THETA KAPPA honor society. He then attended William Tyndale College, a Christian Liberal Arts College in metropolitan Detroit. John majored in Business Administration and minored in Christian Thought. John graduated in 2003 Summa Cum Laude. He was immediately employed by ABN-AMRO Mortgage Lending Company in Ann Arbor. He was placed into their management training program. In this program he rotated through different areas of the organization in preparation for promotion to a management position. Life took a different turn for the Shanks in 2006. In June John enrolled in a summer Greek class at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. John continued his studies in the seminary program until he received his vicarage assignment to Trinity Edwardsville in the spring of 2009. As a vicar John had many roles including campus ministry at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In May of 2010 John graduated with honors with his Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary. Trinity formally called Pastor Shank to serve as associate pastor in 2010 and then as Senior Pastor in 2012. Pastor Shank and Casey have four children, Jack, Callie, Kate, and Ben.

Rev. Jess Biermann

Associate Pastor

Jess Biermann was born into a pastor’s family in 1993. In 1998, his family moved from Holt, Michigan to St. Louis where Jess has called home ever since.  After completing his homeschool studies, he earned a BA in Philosophy with a concentration in applied ethics from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. In 2015, Jess returned to St. Louis to pursue a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary. 

Through an LCMS-U event during his senior year of college, he met Education/Biology student, Johanna Johnson. After bonding over a mutual love of Cardinal baseball and college basketball, the two were married in June of 2017. Jess and Johanna have welcomed three children; Adelaide,  Dietrich, and Genevieve. 

In May of 2019, Jess graduated with his MDiv and is continuing his studies towards a Masters of Sacred Theology.
